I just switched. It was pretty easy. I just made sure to read all the fine print. I was super worried about extending my contract/losing unlimited data. Checked my data usage while I was there and I'm so glad I'm grandfathered in!

Wow, that is completely awesome! Now we need the Colecovision emulator and games, and Namco and Nintendo packs...

It shows you how amazing these games were that they can still make money on them over 30 years later.

These threads always seem to pop every once in awhile but I'm a fan of them so I'll play along :)

AirStumbler ( wireless network discover tool. I prefer it to MacStumbler.
Backlight ( allows screensavers to be used as desktops, works great with MarineAquarium ;)
WClock ( menu bar clock with pop down calendar, now that Calendarclock/MenuCalendarClock has become shareware.
iCal Birthday Shifter ( takes birthdays from Address Book and makes them into events in iCal.

LOL. Yeah that proves it's him. I'm CIA, I know these things.

You don't believe me? He sent that to my eBay and now the auction is cancelled like he just said he was going to do. Sucks but I dont think that other guy is going to get his money back. Not like we are going to find out either.

I have made a flyer in Pages and one of the text box little "corner squares" will not disappear. Actually, its the bottom center square that has the little plus sign in it. Can anyone tell me how to remove it or make it disappear?

You dont seem to know how much pull Samsung has in the components arena do you?

    They are
    #1 in RAM Memory
    #2 in semiconductor LSI
    #1 in flat panel display
    #1 in rechargeable battery
#2 in mobile phones over all
    #1 in NAND flash memory

$8 billion to a company with revenue generation in excess of $140 billion is chunp change. That is around 4% of total revenue.

Never sue your supplier when your supplier can turn around and gobble up other suppliers and increase the price for all OEM makers, but giving itself the cost effective goods, because it also itself is an OEM maker.

Unlike Apple, who is just a customer, Samsung is BOTH a customer AND a supplier at the same time. Either way, they win.

Quite recently, Samsung attempted to take over Sandisk, the NAND flash memory company. It wasnt successful due to some differences in price offers. That alone tells you that Samsung is willing to strangle hold the market even more than it already has. NAND flash market alone, Samsung has over 30 % of the market all to itself. For RAM memory, it close to 40%.

Apple is barking up the wrong tree.

As I said earlier, Samsung are contracted to supply parts, so Apple can do anything they want.

And if Samsung stop providing parts, then they simply open the way for other fabs to take up the slack. And don't bet your bottom dollar that there are companies out there who want Apple's $$.

If Samsung allows it's competition to gear up (eg build a few extra fabs), then the value of their parts will go down as the market gets opened up.

Samsung need Apple more than Apple need Samsung.

Ok, for the dim, here is the problem -

Making parts is one thing, we can all make parts, we can all go into our garage and make a random widget. We can make hundreds of those widgets.

But - here is the kicker -

We need someone to buy those widgets.

If no one buys the widgets, we can't make the widgets, and in this scenario Apple sell the widget to the end user. The game is with Apple, not the parts supplier.

Its never a good thing when the guy behind the reason we buy Mac's leaves. :(

For the user who mentioned that he was behind OS X flaws (you mentioned iTunes bloat) - you are wrong. iTunes isn't run directly by the Mac OS development team, it has its own department. There's probably a little crossover however generally he wouldn't have much input on iTunes.

It is kind of sad but I'm sure Apple will do okay. And there are a bunch of reasons why I buy Macs. Software is a big part but the design was another (having solidly built hardware is nice). If software was the only reason I'd be using Windows because at this point Windows 7 isn't bad and they frankly have more software for less (the Mac App Store game section compared to Steam is a great example of how little software there is and how we're generally getting ripped isn't just games with this problem either).

The iOS ecosystem is more mature than the Android system, and for that I am very happy for being on the iOS bandwagon.

Android doesn't have an ecosystem. The only thing that's close to have a full ecosystem is MS but even that lacks in a lot of major areas. So does apple's though in terms of mail/calendar/contact and sync in general. [MobileMe is NOT free. :|]

webOS seems pretty good but HP swears not to ship any product until the others swipe the market already.

I love the Apple ecosystem. It's so rich and fits in every day life; from pro-work to easy living, its all there.

Rumor: 12 PB Solid State Drives coming next Tuesday?

Just wondering if anyone agrees. That amount of data isn't that big when you think about it..
It doesn't seem that much to me either. But that's probably because Apple will try to not have too many redundant files. But I don't know???

Your out of luck. Under no circumstances will Apple EVER replace a product with another one that is not exactly the same! Period!

While I agree that under those circumstances Apple is unlikely to make the swap I have to disprove your claim. My mom's 14 inch iBook's screen broke when our dog pulled the cord it was plugged into and knocked it to the floor (pre-magsafe days). She sent it into Apple where they so sweetly said they would repair it free of charge even though they didn't have to. It ended up taking a few weeks when they said they would have a new one for her in a couple of days. After a few times calling in to check on the status that never seemed to change, Apple sent her a brand new updated 12 inch powerbook! Another time a friend of mine spilled wine on the keyboard of his 2009 15 inch top of the line Macbook Pro. It worked for a few more months until it finally kaput. He took it into Apple just to see what they would do, not too optimistic. The Genius was awesome and gave him a brand new 2011 top of the line 15 incher!

Well based on the news that Apple's new NC data center was the largest for a single company. I would say yes.

No way ... each gmail account gets upwards of 7 gigabytes of storage ... do you even know how many gmail accounts there are?

Google definitely has more than Apple, it may be that they spread it over multiple data centers, so it's not counted as one.

I'm not that concerned about what features the new phone has. My iPod is by far the easiest to use gadget I own. My phone on the other hand is a horrible design. Loads of features, so on paper it looks good, but in practice is a mess to use. If Apple design a phone that links up via iTunes, works seamlessly and reliably with a well thought out UI and OS, I'll buy it. I do think that they'll stick with iTunes as the sole software for the phone as it already supports contact and calendar synchronisation.
I will be truly shocked if there is something that this phone can do that no other phone can do. I would also be surprised if Apple didn't make a phone that made it easier to do at least one element of current phone usage. Hopefully the basics of phoning, contact organisation and searching, and texting will be better than any of the useless phones I've been lumbered with. It's also important to remember that the design should easily top anything else out there, as design-wise I don't think the competition's that hot.

"The shuffle has no display to tell you what song you're listening to, no playlists, no navigating to the next song, and no EQ settings."

I believe you can navigate to the next song, this review was somewhat contradictory in that respect but at least they liked it. Now to go back to waiting for my 512 version to ship, on or before 01/20/05 changed to on or before 01/21/05

rowlander, you can get compressor to work with more than 1/9th of a core?
That sarcasm is directed at compressor and not at you.

I WISH i could get compressor to work. Oh, sorry....I should clarify, to work beyond 1 frickin' file! If i start a batch, the only thing I'm not sure of is which error I'll get - it's usually 1 of 2.

Yet, I can use Innobits, Bitvice to compress MPEG2 files for DVD (and the ac3s) and well, wouldn't you know, this fine 3rd party apps makes all my cores jump with excitement without me even praying to get on my knees and cry for help :)

I'm a pretty laid back guy, but man compressor just busts my kahonies. Heck, I even emailed Mr. Jobs about it (although nothing back).

And don't even get me started on having to export to QT first. I do not even come close to understanding the logic behind that considering it's their own software!

BUT, compressor is stopping me from upgrading to an 8core so no more money for Apple in that case. No sense spending a few grand on a machine whose potential won't even come close to being tapped.

I don't drink, but feel like I should have one right now.

    ugh :)

Have you configured QMaster? It's a bit of a PITA, but worth it once it starts working.

I have a bad problem I can't seem to fix (for almost a year now). Thanks to Outlook, somehow a duplicate mailbox was created on the server for the admin user (me: gary). When mail is sent to it is possible for it to end up in either of the two mailboxes in /var/spool/dovecot/mail. I manually (as root) deleted one of the mailboxes last year but every once in a while, the duplicate mailbox re-appears. Now, I should clarify that the mailbox is unique (has a unique name), however the owner is still listed as 'gary' twice. Here's the output of the directory:

    aspenridge:mail gary$ ls -l
    total 0
    drwx------ 21 melody mail 714 Dec 26 23:05 19368C01-774D-42B6-B753-8621DD72251F/
    drwx------ 17 enrique mail 578 Jan 20 14:21 2CFD6ABD-CABC-44C8-BA1A-82AB8CFF2AB4/
    drwx------ 13 gary mail 442 Jan 20 14:39 7CF2BDA1-2890-4DA9-9953-41C3425FDF13/
    drwx------ 17 nelly mail 578 Jan 20 13:08 BDA2D0D9-D21F-40FE-8C9E-DD868C750B1C/
    drwx------ 22 gferrer mail 748 Jan 20 14:31 D1D3FF6F-CE36-4682-A31A-F1B7A0E62DF8/
    drwx------ 11 tom mail 374 May 10 2010 E73B7452-101B-4ED5-B8C7-A9E7828288AE/
    drwx------ 9 mail 306 Nov 22 2009 E7E8C925-5BDA-40B4-A6E1-0806C22F55D4/
    drwx------ 16 gary mail 544 Jan 8 14:16 EDE561D8-F6F8-4C1F-A54B-210E5D60CD75/

As you can see, mailbox owned by 'gary' is there twice and this is a problem. I tried deleting the 'gary' user but the system won't allow me to (I think it's because it's the admin user originally created when setting up the system). Because I can't reliably receive mail as, I had to create another user 'gferrer' instead and set 'gary' to forward mail to in WM.

Any ideas what I can do here to fix the problem?
