I'm not very familiar with the differences between the fuels, other than gasoline is more refined.

Diesel is no less refined than gasoline - it's a product of the exact same refinement process.

Different carbon chains are gently boiled off by gradually raising the temperature of the crude. The smaller molecules are the first to burn off. Typically carbon chains 5-8 (pentane through octane) are sold as "gasoline." The next four or so are sold as "kerosene," or jet fuel. After that comes what we call "diesel." Each is as pure as the others, but diesel is made of larger, more complex carbon chains.

I can see both sides of the diesel engine argument. It's hard to deny that diesel engines are, other things being equal, more fuel-efficient than gasoline engines. The higher compression ratio equals greater power output per gallon and greater torque. In the larger sizes that we usually see in trucks, they seem to last longer than gasoline engines, too. But the damn things are noisy, and the exhaust smells really bad.

I canceled my subscription to CR for this very reason. How can anyone rely upon their advice? Ridiculous...

I dunno. I thought Consume Reports existed to INFORM consumers of good and bad things about consumer products and then that would help you make an informed decision based on that information. I never knew you were supposed to "rely on their advice" by buying one product and only one product because they told you to like some kind of freaking lemming. I don't buy a Toyota Camry just because they gave it a good review, but I do want to know if it has potential braking or accelerator pedal issues (whether caused by a mat or something else) before I buy it and that is helpful information to a normal person who wants to know the truth and not just marketing hype from Apple. If I wanted marketing hype, I would go to the Toyota web site, not Consumer Reports. I would think this sort of think would be obvious to most people, but then we have quite a lot of cantaloupes in this world that actually believe that Fox News actually is fair and unbiased and believe every bit of Republican propaganda nonsense that comes out of their mouths on that station so I guess you can't count on people having common sense or being able to judge anything with their own brains instead of having someone plant it there for them.

I really hope the iPod doesn't go down the line of convergence/frankenstein/jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none. It's a solid music player and it's main priority should be as such.

Why do you assume that because a hypothetical MYLO iPod would be able to play videos, IM and go on the net that somehow itunes would be any worse than it already is?

The MP3 market has been saturated for a while now. There's only so much you can do in it, and so much you can do to improve listening to music. I'm on a 4G iPod, and have not been inclined in the slightest to upgrade to either a photo or a video iPod because my music will sound exactly the same on both and the extras they offer simply aren't up to scratch. Apple have done pretty much all they can with listening to music, except perhaps music sharing via WiFi (which very few will use anyway). If they don't move forward and innovate iPod sales will stagnate, people who want one will have already bought one and with no new features worth mentioning why would they buy a new one that will make minimal difference to what they can do with their iPod? I can already listen to music on my current iPod, if Apple want me to upgrade they'll have to offer something much more. The same is true of the majority of iPod users.

The reason the iPod is the success it is today is because it revolutionised the market before it was established. They have to opportunity to do the same here with the kind of device MYLO hints is possible. Or they can do what you are proposing and offer nothing new and fall behind their competitors.

In my experience with work colleagues and parents/in-laws the iPod is almost bordering on being too difficult as it is just with just music and video.

Technophobes are a rare beast these days, and will become even rarer in the future. If they can use a computer, which is many many times more complicated than an iPod or MYLO, then I don't see the problem. The whole "lets not make things complicated" drive actually pisses me off because computers are so damn easy to use today. Of course, I'm very doubtful that technophobes are the primary market for iPods anyway.

Adding slide-out keyboards, larger/deeper navigation menus, wifi connections, and email configuration would probably push it over the edge as far as being too technologically intimidating for most.

Just like the mobile phone market, right? Adding cameras, bluetooth, large navigation menus, email, games, internet has really put a dent in mobile phone sales. People want mobile phones that do nothing but phone, not frankenstien-jack-of-all-trades devices.

Not to mention the size sacrifice.

I would imagine a MYLO iPod would be about the size of a 4G iPod, taking into acount the added thinkness due to the slide out keyboard. That size is more than small enough to fit in pretty much every pocket and fits nicely in your hand, so is there a need for it to be any smaller?

Apple may bring something else to the market to compete if there really is a decent market for devices like the Mylo (which I'm personally not too sure there is).

Devices like the MYLO are the only possible evolution of the MP3-player market. In 10 years stand-alone devices like the iPod will be dead. Why have a Batman-esque utility belt of gadgets when you can have one do it all (and just as well)?

I sincerely hope you're wrong about apple's thinking on this. The iPod should be a pure machine. Maybe a few add-ons, improvements, limited added functionality over time - but it's an MP3 player. The best there is. Don't F with that.

If Apple do that then iPod sales will die whenever their competitors are offer all the other services along with an MP3 player. Apple isn't about conservatisim and playing it safe, the reason the iPod was a success was precisely the opposite: innovation.

"Pure" machines are a dying breed, there are very few around these days. Consoles, computers and mobile phones have all shown that the more you offer the better you sell and that "pure" machines are soon to be extinct.

And apb3, what you're describing in the chocolate and PSP is NOT a QWERTY keyboard. Look at the youtube video of the MYLO.

When you drive to/from Toronto all the time, standard just makes no sense, now that autos are much more efficient.

People do it every day, It does make sense. Everything from VW, to cobalts/G5 to trucks. Small car autos are junk, and do not have the longevity of larger autos , like in trucks. If I ever own a car (not gonna happen.). It will be a handshaker, or nothing at all.

So I guess I can't be in the guard or reserve...

Not at all, provided you meet the requirements. I was merely pointing out that a Director of IT posted on a Mac forum asking how to remotely access his network.

Based on your posts, I question if you meet the age requirements of this forum.

Just maybe, we can hope Apple will finally release a "normal" desktop computer. My older iMac is failing and I so much hate to have to toss out a nice, working 24" LCD display because of a problem with a graphics memory chip.

I'll likely build a Hackintosh so as to prevent this problem in the future. That is unless Apple finally sells computers that can be repaired for less then the price of a new computer.

I can. Full screen is in large part based on the iOS, if that holds true the address bar is staying.

That's true, but even in iOS the address bar hides when you scroll down to save space for content. In Lion DP2, Apple has implemented a nice little autohide for the bookmarks bar and tab bar I just don't see why they couldn't do the same thing for the navigation bar.

It's no big deal; I probably wouldn't hide my navigation bar anyway. All I'm saying is that I think they'll make it an option.

Yep, another example of Apple coercing developers (and users) into using their app store. "The choice is yours, either:

    1. use our app store and your app is a first-class citizen of OS X!

    2. don't use our app store and your app is a second-class app that will not be able to work like first-class apps -- now they can't even be deleted in the same way..."

Will it be any surprise that eventually the second-class apps will be eliminated and the only option will be apple's app store. Classic proprietary monopoly tactics.

But this will become confusing to some. Some will ask why can I delete some apps this way and others I have to move manually to the trash?

My girlfriend complained the other day that installing new programs is a bit of a pain. I showed her the app store and her response was but what if the programs I want is not in the app store? In this case VLC.

It's finally all finished. Put the Craftsman tool chest in this weekend. It mostly hold cable and repair tools for guitars.

The white box on the front right leg of the desk is actually a Belkin remote. I've wired the desk so that when I hit that switch the 3 displays, audio monitors and all USB controllers will turn on.

I hate wires showing so I went to great lengths to hide them.

I totally forgot about those guys

They should also be careful with their quotes in their financials. Tim Cook in the last conference call basically gave Microsoft and Amazon ammunition when he said things "We have the largest app store", making the term quite generic and descriptive. This doesn't help their case at all.

I am quite surprised that Apple legal hasnt counseled them on this.

I am not sure if you know, but there are differences between trademark law and patent law. In this case, the one you cited (which I studied), Amazon was protecting its system or process by which they achieved a 1-click process. This is a clear cut patent infringement.

However, the current article deals with a trademark issue, which is different from patent law. In this instance, we are dealing with generic terms (App Store) and Apple cannot trademark that. As another member said, Apple does not have a trademark in App Store ;)

Quoted for truth. Great post. Really helpful for the non-legal folk here. It helps quiet down the know it alls as well.

People forget that MS has dominated pretty much every market they enter. Whether it be PDAs, PC desktops, Office software suites, internet browsers, and gaming (did I miss any other markets?). Yes, in almost every instance, their initial products leave much to be desired(XBOX+Halo excepted) but they pretty much rose to the occasion and soon took over the market. Partly because their competitors don't respond to MS's moves. Zune, in its current iteration, does not scare me, but if Apple decides the status quo is cool, then the ZUne could become a force. However, I doubt that Apple will stay seated. Com'n iPhone, vPod, PodCar, whatever!!! :p

Well I really can't judge it until I'm actually able to touch and use it myself, but from the looks, they've gone consumer. *here's hoping for the best* I really want it to work... but Adobe is looking better by the day.

Uh...so just being black and green means 'consumer' now?

I wouldn't mind seeing some Skype integration alongside the cell... When in range of a Wi-Fi, be a Skype phone (optional)... When out of Wi-Fi range, work as a cell.

Granted, it's not as smooth sounding as a real cell phone, but the way the kids in the house burn up minutes during the day, I'd rather have them use Skype so they can call their friends all they want. That is when they are wanting to talk privately (like most of the time) rather than use MSN Messenger. Maybe some Wi-Fi / Bluetooth option to use it through audio iChat, too. :-)

I doubt that they would do that, though. Especially if they end up being a virtual carrier... They'll want you to use up minutes like any cell carrier.

One more thing... they'll change the name from iMac to Mac, bringing a perfect symmetry to their product line-up:

    Mac
    Mac Pro

    MacBook
    MacBook Pro

Definitely not. There's too much branding in the iMac name. For consumers, it means ease and simplicity with power and looks. Additionally, just calling it Mac would be confusing for everyone, especially when they ask what kind of mac you own?

    "I own a Mac."
    "Yeah? What kind?"
    "A Mac."
"I know. You just said that. But what kind of mac?"
"A Mac. You know. A Mac."
"I'm going to kill you now, sir."

The general population never heard the term "App" until Apple released the iPhone.

Nor did the general population ever shop for Apps online until Apple built the App Store.

The abbreviation "App" used in conjunction with "store" to denote an online marketplace in which to buy applications is a unique combination that is not known in generic parlance.

    Apple will win this.

Huh? What happened there? Didn't Think Secret used to be the place to go for the most accurate rumors? I definitely trust macrumors and appleinsider a lot more than think secret now though.

They used to be pretty good, but they've been consistently wrong (or make worthlessly vague predictions) for a couple years now.

I don't know that I'd say I trust macrumors. They don't really report any rumors, they just link to rumors on other sites. The trustiness completely depends on who they link to.
